Interview: with Charmaine from FatHouseCats

Hi everyone,

How's your Good Friday going? I'm a Catholic so I'd be doing the usual, going to mass, abstaining from meat, etc. What about the rest of you? (answer: reading this post, duh.)

Sorry, I tend to talk a lot to myself, one of the few effects of stress.. but okay enough about me, our blog is doing something quite different on this Holy Day, and we thought we'd like to bring focus to someone else rather than us. So what does that mean?

Well, we're going to be featuring an interview with an exceptionally pretty and stylish fashion blogger, who also happens to be a very close and dear friend, Charmaine from Fat House Cats.

Isn't she just gorgeous!? I, personally, am so jealous of her flawless skin and beautiful makeup - and if you guys are too, read on to know more about what she uses to keep looking this amazing!

Review: Clarins UV Plus HP BB Cream

Hi everyone,

it's Wednesday, which means Ash and I have no school. So I thought I'd put up a quick review here on the newest Clarins BB Cream on the market.

I do not normally purchase BB Creams (ever since my fiasco with the Etude House one leaving me looking like an oil slick), and thus only got the sample. I must say the amount is quite generous because you only need so little for your whole face. The entire packet should be enough for at least 4-5 days usage.

It is a new addition to their best-selling sunblocks, and claims to work the same way they do but with a better job at concealing flaws. Personally, I feel that this is quite an overkill because their beige (the 2nd from the left) sunblock already did that job.

I am going to be honest here that I was very skeptical about this particular BB cream when it came out, mostly because I feel that way about most BB Creams; but more than not, it was because I did not think anything could really top their sunblock.

I was right. Well, at least right to myself because I did not end up liking it. Click below to find out why.

INSTAGRAM: What you're missing out on

Hi girlies (and guys?) haha,

We've got an Instagram/Facebook/Twitter account, and we'd love to add to the family so do add us up on the side buttons below the "About Us" section, much appreciated!

Now, you're probably wondering, what's so different about those social media applications from the blog? It should be about the same right? Well, not really. Here, as much as we'd like to be personal, we maintain a more professional front - meaning to say we revolve more around reviews and posts rather than delve into our lives.

However, on our applications, we do try to insert some snippets of our everyday ongoings, just to be that little more close to our readers :) And one very good example would be from Instagram! Here's some photos we never really show on the blog:

- -

LAST BUT NOT LEAST! We're having an Instagram giveaway, and we are also thinking of making this quite a regular occurrence :) Do add us at @Samanthashley_ to see the contest details!

It's a pretty straightforward thing: Just simply follow/re-insta/and tag us. That's it. Simple as ABC.

Hope to see you on Instagram pretty ladies!

Review: Urban Decay's Naked Flushed

Good morning lovely faces!

Urban Decay has recently released a number of new products at Sephora, the Naked Flushed palette as well as their Naked BB cream - Now honestly, who DOESNT love a perfectly sized palette with the perfect colours within to take on the go?

Upon reading about the product,   I almost immediately turned to Sam and told her I HAD to get it when it comes out. So after about a week  of giving it a go, I believe I've earned the right to say that this is my favourite blush, highlighter and bronzer of all time. The pigmentation is absolutely amazing and what's its nice and compact to take out!

To find out why this has become a staple for me, click below ;)

The Packaging

This is the packaging of the product, its pretty sleek. The material of the packaging is definitely a little heavier than the naked 2 palette, so its a lot more sturdier. Its small enough that I can hold it with my palm and you might be pleased to hear that it is in fact, smaller than an iPhone 5!

Photograph credits here

So the palette comes with a highlighter, a blush and a bronzer, the pigmentation of the products are beyond amazing and it's truly hard to find a palette where you are fond of all the colours. Note* both blush and bronzer have a matte finish. This product does not come with a brush like benefit box powders, but I feel that each specific colour requires a different brush for the most precise application.

The Bronzer

The Bronzer is a light orangey- matte brown colour that is a little sheerer as opposed to the other colours on the palette, but definitely buildable. I'm starting to grow to like this shade more that my mac mineralize skin finish natural in give me sun,  but they both give rather different colour payoffs. This is a more natural shade for paler skin tones without having to look like you've got dirt on your face where as the MSFN is a heavier sun kissed orange-toned shade.

Application : I take my eco tools blush brush and sweep it into the hallows of my cheek, similar to how I apply the MSFN.

The Highlighter

I wasn't fond of powder highlighters against my skin before stumbling upon this product, but it really does give my face the perfect amount of glow without having to make my face look like a disco ball. Its basically a powder version of the benefit's high beam that I love a lot with a frosted finish.  Pigmentation is perfect and should you like to be more adventurous, this can even be used a an all over eyeshadow colour too. It has a frosted finish to

Application: Using my coastal scents fluffy crease brush, I lightly feather the product onto the highest points of my face. I feel that using a brush gives a more air-brushed appearance, but should you be in a hurry, applying this with your finger tips works perfectly fine too!

The Blush

The dark rosy blush has a medium /heavy pigmentation depending on how heavy a hand you have going on through application . Sam actually saw that my blush was a lot more noticeable as compared to the nars orgasm blush towards the end of the day, which says a lot about the lasting power. The hot pink colour is again, buildable.

Application: I am still on the hunt for a decent blush brush but for now I take a random drugstore powder brush to apply this product to the apples of my cheek. I recommend applying this with a lighter hand, so your hand should be held at the tip of the brush handle as you apply.

Before and After

The finish is quite natural, as I said, it's no doubt buildable. I went with a light/ medium hand on the products and find that the colours don't appear over the top, but are of the perfect shade for me. I quite like seeing the significance of the product through photographs and I hope these photos speak for themselves about the pigmentation of the product. Lasting power is present and the products apply really smoothly without having the chalky feel.

Please excuse my horrid under eye cirlces, it once again has to do with the lack of sleep and stress I've been getting- thank full it will all be over in 2 weeks or so!

Overall Thoughts

Probably one of the best palettes ever made, Its definitely something I've been using almost everyday that I have my makeup on. It gives the most natural finish -  well done Urban Decay. Rest assured, I will be taking this product with me back to Hong Kong for the summer and might possibly make it into my holy grail products list. Should you be starting out in makeup and want to find THE palette that covers it all for your cheeks, this is the one ladies ;)

Overall Rating: 9/10

stocklist: (SG) any sephora stores near you for SG$48
(HK) at  Dudes for around HKD$396** ( this is the discounted price if you're their Facebook fan)

Craziest Facials

Hi Everyone,

tonight I thought that our blog woud do something different besides our usual reviews and recommendations.

It seems that lately, everyone's been trying out really crazy facial routines, and here are some I've collected for your viewing pleasure (or disgust? haha).

1) Nightingale Bird Droppings Facial

I first saw this on "Mirror Mirror" where Julia Roberts requested for it to be applied to her face. I thought it was a joke, but apparently I am wrong. An anti-aging remedy supposedly. Watch the video to find out more!

PS: I do not mind trying this to be honest, but then again I'd die for beauty.

- -

2) Flaming Facial

Well, as you probably guessed.. The Chinese invented it. It's supposed to be anti-aging..

"The idea behind Huǒ liáo is to place a towel soaked in alcohol and a special "elixir" on the face, legs or other parts of the body, then light it on fire for a few seconds. This action apparently stimulates the skin and addresses dullness, sagging and wrinkles."

Only for the extremely vain, and people who aren't afraid of pain (not because of the fire but because well, it's China hey?)

- -

3) Beer Facial

So, many people know the wonders of beer.

It makes you hair shiny when you use it as a conditioner, it softens your hair when you use it as a treatment, it even makes guys pregnant. Amazing!

And now, lo and behold, it works for facials as well - or maybe more as a facelifting treatment. Apparently it uses the vitamins from yeast to rejuvenate pores and relieve muscular tensions. Funny, it manages to relieve most tensions even when drunk too.

- -

I'm not too sure where you can get these facials done at in Singapore to be honest, but it's always interesting to know what's out there right? ;)

Hope this cures your Monday Blues (though yes, Monday is technically over). Have a good night everyone! xx

Here's to a good Tuesday!

Actively Correcting

Hi Beauty Bloggers and Beauty Blog-Lovers!

As promised on our Instagram, after winning Roseanne Tang's Kiehl's "Be a BBetter Friend" Giveaway, I'm here to do a review on their newly released BB cream!

Now, they say the benefits of this particular product (which include ACTIVELY CORRECTING AND BEAUTIFYING one's skin tone, lightening of scars, and general improvement) will show after about 1-2 months usage.

As most of you know, I am no BB cream lover, but I will use this for the course as recommended and come back here with a conclusion as to whether this one really lives up to the hype!

Rachel K's CC Cream

Good Afternoon Beautifuls,

we've got 2 posts lined up for you today to make up for some lost time :) and since this particular product has been quite a hit since it's entered the market, I thought I'd write a post on it for some of you curious ones!

Rachel K's CC Cream is no new contender in the BB/CC Cream market, and has actually been around for about a year. It differs from most BB Creams because, very obviously, CC stands for Color Control. This means that, unlike most Blemish Balms, this one aims to correct color tones for most people and has a more accurate adjustability to the skin without the dreaded greyish undertone.

At the same time, it offers the same range of benefits to the skin as promised by BB Creams. What's not to love!?

credits to: Rachel K Cosmetics

Rachel Kum herself claims this as her makeup secret to looking flawless (though let's admit it, she's already dropdead gorgeous without this), and for so many of us, isn't there no better assurance of the quality of the product than that?

So, Ashley and I thought we'd put this product to the test.

The Ultimate Suede

Good Morning Pretty Faces!

I'm all for the natural look, hence I am a sucker when it comes to any matte beauty products. Less than a week ago, I came across the revlon Colour Stay suede lipstick line and they had really lovely shades that you probably wouldn't be able to find elsewhere in the drugstore without a sheen. I had a hard time just picking one, but ended up going home with 070 In preview. I definitely wanted to opt for the colour 095 finale, but figured that I wouldn't wear it as often.

I have grown to love not only the colour , but the texture and the last power -  Having to find all of these traits in a lipstick is truly rare, especially within a drugstore product. This has definitely made it into my holy grail lipsticks from the drugstore and rest assure that this might not be the only colour I purchase!

Cry us a river

Hi everyone,

how's your week coming along? I hope yours is good because, as far as these upcoming 2-3 weeks are concerned, ours is only going to go downhill.

In fact, for awhile, this blog might experience a little bit of a hiatus here and there- meaning to say that we might really post way less often than we normally do. Of course, we will strive for more than 5 times a week, but otherwise do bear with us.

Our assessment week in school is coming up, and we've put so much into this blog that now we're lagging so far behind! :( If you like, do comment and show us some support for school! That'd mean a lot to us!

xx, Sam & Ashley

Clarins Carings

Afternoon lovers!

Today, I'm here to write about one of my staples in my everyday routine. Sunblock.

I cannot live without it. I have used sunblock ever since I was 20 and had just done my first fractional laser to get very bad post-acne scars off my forehead. My skin was very thin and vulnerable, so I had to apply SPF 90 (yes you saw that right) sunblock on my face (given to me by the aesthetic clinic).

Now, at that high a level, sunblock can get very greasy. Whilst I did feel secure about my sun protection, I felt extremely uncomfortable about how I looked.

Since then, I have been sourcing for THE perfect sunblock for my skin, and I think I've very well found it.

I first saw the review of this sunblock on Beautyfool's blog, and she made it sound so beautiful that I just had to purchase it; and she is not wrong. This sunblock is heavenly.

Mac Studio Finish Concealer

I'm pretty sure in my youtube video, a number of you realized that I was using the Mac studio finish concealer to cover up my under eye circle and it was pretty obvious that It made quite a difference in the appearance of my under eye circles.

I get that there's talk of using a colour corrector, followed by concealer to get the perfect coverup for those bad boys - But when we are in a rush or feel that there isn't a need to do a two step cover up, we can always opt for one that has it all.

Now, I've had this product for quite sometime and It's been rediscovered about a month ago and I absolutely love it. If I'm ever in a rush to head out the door, I always use this to cover up and to take to go as it conceals and brightens. It doesn't appear grayish and isn't cakey. ( This obviously depends on your skin condition, prepping it with an eye cream will definitely help create a smoother canvas for application to prevent creasing). I bought mine in NC30 and I'll be very honest - I hated the texture to begin with. I am not sure if its to do with the weather that I bought the product in (winter) but I had a hard time with the consistency.

Simply apply the product with your ring finger under the eye area as the ring finger contains the least amount of pressure. Should you want to see a better demonstration of the application menthols, click here to see how I apply my under eye concealer.

(Taken in the evening)

(Taken in the morning)

ps: Excuse how tired I look in the photographs, I've been caught up in a lot of things lately - hence the horrible under eye circles!

Do I feel that this is one of the best eye concealers ever? mm it would be in my top 5 at the moment, I decided to blog about this because its a pretty skeptical product. MAC makeup artists over the counter wouldn't necessarily recommend this for under eyes, but I've been using it so far and its been pretty great. Only reason I feel that it's not the best concealer in the world is that my pot in particular, doesn't have a consistent texture - it can be dry when its placed in a cold room and can have an extremely creamy texture the next when placed in a warm room and hence reacts that same to the weather. To put it in short, I'ts probably one of my favorite concealers to have with me for the summer time.

Overall rating: 7/ 10

You can definitely find this at the Sephora at ION or your free standing MAC stores.

Essensuals is Essential

It's going to be a brand new week soon everyone!

How are you doing? I for one am not ready for this week to start. I've been so busy with the blog I've hardly had time to deal with school work - eeps! :x

Though admittedly we haven't been posting as often because we've had some other stuff to settle!

But for now, let's leave that out of our minds (or my mind more like), and concentrate on the post I've got up today!

I joined Ohsofickle's Free Hair Makeover giveaway on instagram, and was one of the very few girls who won! (I literally jumped in my chair when my cousin told me she saw my name on the chosen list!) I couldn't really decide what I wanted to go with, as I could literally choose to do anything I wanted- I was allowed 1 free haircut and any service of my choice.

Eventually, I decided to do their Japanese. Now, now, I know. Out of everything in the world I could have selected to do, I decided on that!?

Let me explain more.
- -

I went to the Essensuals at Bugis, which is honestly quite well-known. It's sponsored many bloggers and has gained so much popularity over a rather short time.

Now, many girls I know would opt for the current trends like dip-dyed/ombre hair, or pretty funky new-age edgy hairstyles. Please know that I am really not that adventurous type. I find what looks good on me and I stick to it. Sometimes I make some changes here and there but essentially I find that I look pretty much the same.

I've permed, colored, electrocuted (that's what perming your hair is called in a China salon) my hair, and have had lengths from boyish to waist-length. Currently I'm settled on chest-length, center parting, naturally black hair.  The problem really isn't the style, as mentioned. It is the state it is in.

Terrifying, I know. It looks like static runs through my hair. Which I am convinced sometimes that it does. It is difficult to think that I may not have descended from the Woolly Mammoth or Big Foot with my type of hair, but there you have it.

Bryan, my stylist was pretty astonished that I have done absolutely nothing to care for my hair. Actually, a lot of people are kind of shocked (shrugs). So hence, I guess you got to the root of why I chose to have a treatment instead of any other kind of service.

So these are the steps to getting my makeover:

First, as with all hair makeovers: the hair cut. Apparently my hair had been rather thick and wiry and needed a good thinning and trim. You can see the result :x That's really a whole lot of hair. My head definitely felt lighter afterwards.

Bryan was quite meticulous in telling me what would be good for me and how I could improve the state of my hair. I have naturally wavy hair, so he said he could bring that out with a better cut than the one I had before. I trusted him so I left him to do whatever he felt would be best.

I then went for a hair wash, and came back to have the Japanese Spa Treatment put into my hair and left under the steamer for about a good 20 minutes thereabout. It was warm steam at first but cooled off after to lock in the moisture and effects of the treatment.

After I was done with that, I went for another hair wash and returned for a blow dry. The lady who was blowing my hair for me was extremely detailed and took her time with what I asked.

I did say I had naturally wavy hair and wanted something loose, but I think she kind of mistook it as I wanted curly hair.. and so that is what you see in the picture. A lot of curls. However, granted that she spoke Mandarin and mine is rather down the drain, I find it hard to blame her.

The After Photo:

Well, as you can see here, it really is very curly! The effect didn't last long because I kept running my fingers through my hair to loosen the curls.. which worked effectively enough.

My hair was and is definitely much softer and feels very smooth to the touch. Most treatments I've done at this price, which is originally about SGD$120 (though I got it for free), last about a month, so I'm going to wait it out and see how it goes.

Overall thoughts:

I did have a few thoughts being at the salon. One was that the salon did indeed look very beautiful. There were so many thoughtful details such as REALLY good lighting for photo taking (I did not even have to edit any of these photos taken), to magazines fanned out on the table after you return from your hairwash, to even your choice of juice upon arrival at the salon.

However, if you, like me, are rather shy, the whole scene may be quite intimidating. There is a constant flow of bloggers who will be taking so many photos of themselves, dolling themselves up, and posing for the camera, that you may feel a little out of place.

Now, I am only a small beauty blogger, but I did imagine that if I wasn't I might feel really really awkward with so much going on around me. Otherwise, if you are immune to your environment, I guess it could be alright.

For a Free Hair Makover, I do not think there is much to ask for. I got a free haircut and free hair treatment. I am a easily satisfied customer. The only downfall to this whole thing was that I did not mention to him how thinning my hair actually makes it very poofy at the top (a mistake that is really solely my own). I totally forgot to mention that in the midst of everything going on.

In general, I do think it's worth a visit just to have a consultation with Bryan. He will make you feel like you are in very professional hands for sure.

- -

To everyone, we're sorry our posts have slowed down during the weekend. We have been busy filming our videos and dealing with other things.

I hope this was an insightful post to those who have been wanting to try the salon out!

Have a good Sunday everyone, and take care! x

Please note that I do not use all these products at once, it's just that this is the range I select from; I choose them according to my skin and mood that particular day.

The most common routine which I go by would be:

- Shiseido Perfect UV Protector (apply to whole face and neck)
- Clarins UV Plus HP (apply to whole face and neck)
- YSL Anti-Cernes Multi-Action Concealer (apply to undereyes)
- Garnier Roll-On Light BB in Natural (apply on top of YSL Concealer)
- Guerlain Meteorites (lightly brush onto whole face)
- Smashbox Halo Powder (apply under eyes for extra brightness)
- NARS Orgasm Blush (apply to the apples of cheeks)
- Laneige Art Play Waterproof Eyeliner (apply to top lids only)
- Bobbi Brown Brow Mascara (apply lightly to eyebrows)
- Baby Lips Lip Glow in Pink Blast (apply as a lip base to moisturize)
- Dior Addict in Riviera (apply on top of Baby Lips)

Final look:

I am no natural beauty, though I aim to make my makeup look that way. Ash is also a fan of the naturally made-up look, which basically revolves around enhancing your overall features. However, she goes for a matt finish; and I go for a dewy one. A reason for that is very simply that I have skin that's prone to dryness, so matt could actually age me.

I focus on my eyes and my lips as opposed to my face. I've worn eyeliner since 7 years ago, so it's definitely become integrated into my routine. As for my lips, they've recently gotten very pale so I normally put on lipstick to make myself look more awake. The brightness of the lipstick depends on the deadness of my face, haha.

I do not apply BB creams or foundations because my skin oils up under them very quickly, and I prefer to air my blemishes (is there such a thing?) rather than mask them up. I do spend a significant amount of time concealing my dark rings, though I must say that time has shortened by a lot since I've gotten my YSL eye cream.

In total, I take about 15-30 minutes for my whole makeup routine, depending on how slowly I am moving and how sleepy I am.

That's all for my post today, I hope you've enjoyed it.

Until then, take care of yourselves! XX
