Review: Bobbi Brown Long- Wear Gel Eyeliner

Awarded 'Best of Beauty' by 'Allure' Magazine (2012) , Winner of '50 Best Beauty Products 2013' by 'Siempre Mujer Magazine' and Selected as a "Best Beauty Buy" by InStyle Magazine (May 2013).
The infamous Bobbi Brown Long- Wear Gel Eyeliner -  is it truly worth the hype?

Despite having dupes in the market, I still felt the need to try the product first hand to get what the hype was all about. I guess that comes with every beauty/ makeup addict huh ? haha - I justified my purchase simply because I do use eyeliner almost every day whenever I'm out because I like the way it defines my eyes and makes my lash line looks a lot bolder.

About
This award-winning liner gives you the look of liquid liner with the ease & feel of a gel formula. Long-wearing, water-resistant color glides on & let's you get it just right before it dries - then stays without a smear or crease.

Packaging
Pretty standard packaging, being the clutz I am I've dropped it a couple times through rushing to get ready in the mornings and it's still in perfect shape! Like with any other gel liner, you just have to remember to screw the cap on tightly so that air doesn't seep in to dry out your gel liner :)

Texture

The gel is very smooth, pigmented and is creamy enough for the brush to glide without tugging on your eyelid throughout application. The colour is more intense than the drugstore dupe from Maybelline. It might look a little dry but I assure you its because I got slightly sun burnt on my hands and the skin on the area is just dry.

Application

To each their own, there are different way to apply your gel eyeliner depending on the brush you've selected. I've gone for a precise eye liner brush that I picked up from the drugstore years ago. Here i did a very standard line, no wing no nothing.

Before & After
As you can see the pigmentation of the liner serves its purpose, even without mascara, my lash line doesn't look as sparse and my eye looks slightly bolder.

Overall Thoughts

I wouldn't say I have insanely oily eyelids but if it were on a scale of  1- 10 i'd place it at 3. Applying the product in the morning is done without hassle, and it stays in place. However over time I find that it does smear a little onto the top of my eyelid. The best way to go about it is by either applying a eye primer or setting your gel liner with a eyeshadow to set it in place.

Compared to other gel eyeliners, I'd have to say that this has definitely held up the best so far. As mentioned, I do like the pigmentation of this product and the way it looks once applied and I've got no problem with the application process at all.

Recommended For
Anyone starting out with eyeliner - Liquid liners can be tricky to deal with just because of its wet consistency but with the gel liner its easier to draft out your eyeliner.

Would I repurchase
I've used the Maybelline Gel liner which has been known as a dupe for the bobbi brown long- wear gel eyeliner and I feel that the bobbi brown liner is slightly more pigmented. The consistency is pretty much the same. I'd say I'd go back for the bobbi brown gel liner just because of the pigmentation and the fact that people have said that it's lasted them for about a year and half!

Stockist: HK$210 at any bobbi brown counters

Overall Rating: 7.5 / 10

  1. I think gel liners are much easier to use than liquid ones! I use the ones from Maybelline.

  3. I've tried the Maybelline one, and I like it cause of the variety of colors they have (I have them in black, brown and blue!). Have you tried, or know of any other colors that Bobbi Brown stocks for this gel eyeliner?

    1. Hi Mel! :)

Maybelline has quite a selection and the new colour tattoo's can definitely double up as a gel liner too. I have not tired any other shades of the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Liners but I am aware that there are quite a wide range of colours available! you can check the other colours out here! http://www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com/product/2328/7785/Makeup/Eyes/Eyeliner/Long-Wear-Gel-Eyeliner/index.tmpl

      Hope it helps!

  5. Hi !
I just discover your blog and I love it so far ! Your reviews are really helpful :) and we kinda like the same thing so it's great !
I have a big issue with every king of eyeliner because I don't know if my eyelids are super oily or what, but I tried all the tricks possible to have an eyeliner that doesn't smudge on my upper lids but couldn't find the perfect one yet :( I first tried every kind of pencil eyeliners but too creemy doesn't stay more that 2 hours even if I put primers or set eyeshadows on top of it :( it simply smudge and actually disapear along the day ><
I also tried liquid eyeliner but it smudged because I have another issue, my eyes cry when I yawn ^^" the only liquid eyeliners I am actually using and didn't move at all is the liquidlast eyeliner from MAC. but I want to try something that make a softer line than a liquid liner.
When I discover gel eyliner, I first tried the one from Stila, did you tried it yet ? since I only have a small pot and it was discontinued in my country I could'nt really have an idea on it. Now I have the MAC one for a year now, it's smudge a bit and I was wondering on trying out the Bobbi Brown one, the Maybelline one or the Stila one... Or anything else ?
thank you a lot for your help !
sorry for the huge message ^^"

    1. Hi Celine!

We love reading feedback or questions, so dont worry about the long message:) Personally I don't have very oily eyelids but have gone through eyeliners have that smudged to a large extent. Here are some things you can try out!

Setting your eyelids with a translucent powder BEFORE application of eyeliner. By doing so, the powder is able to absorb all the oil to create a less-oily surface for the eyeliner to sit on. Following this, you can apply any sort of eyeliner you'd like and if you wish you can further set it again with the translucent powder to seal.

Another thing you can try that's in the market now are eyeliner tapes! There are various shapes and sizes to these tapes in the market that will suit your eye shape. I am not particularly sure which brands carry them specifically but just check out the eyelid/ eyeliner tape section at your local asian beauty store or at SaSa. This is provided that you don't have sensitive eyelids towards the adhesive on the tape.

As far as finding out which eyeliners work best for you, you can try the one-day tattoo liners that a couple of japanese brand carry, ie K-Palette one day tattoo liner. It's all about trial and error as not everyone has the same outcome with every liner :)

      I hope this helps :)
