1-Day Acuvue Define (Part Two) : The Fitting

Hi lovelies!

Welcome to part two of our 1-Day Acuvue Define post! In this post, we will be talking about our fitting experience which J&J set us up with at EyeChamp at NEX. We will take you through a regular fitting for contact lenses to give first time contact lens users an insight as to what goes on. Don't forget to read part one which will give you more information about the 1-Day Acuvue Define lenses.

The Fitting
1. Eyescan

First up was a simple retinal scan just do to the basic needs of checking the shape of our eyes etc.

2. Standard Eye Test

How chic do we look in our new glasses? The lighting in the room was a little dim and I had left my flash add-on to my camera at home so I'm terribly sorry if the photos are just a tad dark. Anywho, I'm sure most of you have done a basic eye test before and this was used to determine our degrees to our eyesight. Our results were that we both have a slight degree but was not strong enough for our contacts to carry one. Hence we were issued the contacts without a degree.

3. Selecting our contacts

These are the three types of lenses that we got to pick from, to read more about the difference between the three with specific details and measurements regarding diameter size click here.

4. The tools required (presented with)

Now the tools we were presented with was a contact holder and a pair of forceps to pick up the contact lenses once they're in the solution. Seeing that these are contacts which you throw out after a day, there is no need to keep the contacts in a contact case for the next day. However, for the introductory session, we had these tools present to help us throughout the process :)

5. Practicing hygiene

Now of course we had already washed our hands right before this started, (they have a wash basin for you at Eyechamp) , the area in which you apply your contacts should be clean in case your contacts fall out onto the surface.

6. Prepping
Making sure that the contacts are sat properly and not the other way around so that it sits snuggly in our eye. Should the contact be put inside out, it will bring about discomfort and because it won't sit properly, the contacts can fall out upon blinking. To determine the right way up, you can look at the corners, it should be a smooth round edge as opposed to a very boxy looking fit as shown in the photograph. Furthermore, You can look at the coloring on the lens itself to determine which is the right way up :)

7. Putting in the contacts

We then had a go a putting the contacts in! I definitely have to give props to sam for getting the contact in really quickly - believe it or not it took me a probably 30 mins to have the courage to put a contact in a year ago! Basically you want to place the contact on ur index finger and sort of "open" your eyes with both middle fingers as you can see in the photograph! Another tip is not having really long nails in fear that it might scratch the contacts or even your eye.

8. Letting it sit

After putting the contacts in, we were to have it in for about 5 - 10 minutes to let the contacts sit and to see how we feel about them. Here's sam looking lovely as always whilst her contacts are in! Ps, don't you just love the lip colour she's rocking?

9. Checking the fit

Once its set for about 10 minutes, Shermaine did another eyescan where she would look through the lens to see how the contacts fit on our pupil.

Our Contacts
These are our before and after photographs with the lenses on! Sam has the Accent style lens on where as I have the Vivid Style lens on, can you spot the difference? The contacts look extremely natural and we definitely are looking forward to trying the 7-day kit very soon!

Our Experience
Overall the experience was great and especially for first time contact lens users - going for a fitting is definitely recommended. Learning the right way to put on contacts and making sure that they are the right fit for you are very important because these ultimately end up going in our eyes. If misused or not handled with care - there is a possibility of getting and eye infection or just irritation of your eyes in general. You will know everything you need to know about lenses to make the process of wearing them problem free :)

Our optician Shermaine was really nice and the overall process was enjoyable, we've definitely gained more insight to the simple steps taken to apply contact lenses. We are currently awaiting the arrival of our contact lenses to do a full review for you guys.

Review: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel

I have been on the hunt to switch up my current moisturizer, the Neutrogena Hydroboost Water gel for the longest time ever. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely Adore my water gel but, it's always good to switch out your skin care products once in awhile to ensure that you're getting the most out of that one product and not become immune to its benefits. I've been using the Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel for about... 4 years now. I love its hydrating properties and despite normal skin, I prefer a gel formula over a cream because it absorbs right in and won't leave my skin feeling sticky.

My Criteria for a good moisturizer
  1. A gel formulation
  2. Hydrating properties
  3. No strong fragrances
  4. Dries smooth without leaving an oily layer
Simple right? yes, I've gone through quite a number... Gatineau, DeclĂ©or, Jurlique (The old formulation), Garnier.. etc and have found none that can compare to the Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel, until I came across the Clinique Dramatically different Moisturizing Gel. This was a gift from Sam for my birthday and since the 9th, I've been using it every single day and I already notice a change in the complexion of my skin!

About

Targeted towards: Combination Oily & Oily Skin
"The oil-free moisture "drink" developed by Clinique's dermatologists to maintain optimal moisture balance for skins comfortable in the cheeks but oily in the T-zone or oily all over. Oil-free formula softens, smooths, improves."
Packaging

The packaging is incredibly simple yet hygienic. Unlike the Neutrogena Water gel, this comes in a pump which is more sanitary than having to dish your fingers into a pot to reach the product. The container is made of sturdy plastic material so there's no fear of the product crashing to the ground in the midst of our hectic mornings.

Texture

I wasn't sure how to depict how hydrating the moisturizer is so i did a long swatch of the product to show you guys the consistency. As you can tell, the gel is very light, isn'y oily at all and absorbs right in. It doesn't leave my skin feeling sticky nor leave my face feeling itchy due to dryness.

Overall Thoughts

I am really impressed and this product has definitely lived up to the youtube hypes! Literally almost everyone uses either the gel or the lotion. I'm not sure if I'm over thinking or over looking but I feel that my complexion has improved, to the point where I can walk out the door with only an under eye concealer on with my eye make up and of course a little added cheek product. But nonetheless, I only need sunscreen and no foundation/tinted moisturizer. This is great because Sam & I focus a lot on skincare more so than covering up with makeup and to see a product work out for either of us makes us really happy. I couldn't be happier that I got this for my birthday, thanks sam :)

Here's me without any make up on whatsoever. I now only use a moisturizer in the morning and a toner/ collagen mist at night and I feel that this has worked amazingly on my skin, I have an updated skincare video prepped for you guys that will be up on the weekend so stay tuned ;)

Ps! If you didn't like the dramatically different lotion before, you might want to head down to clinique or sephora to test it once more. Why? They've changed their formula so its a lot less sticky. So if you have dry skin the lotion + might be the option for you. Nonetheless, I advice to you do a swatch at the store to see if you like the texture before purchasing.

Recommended for:
- Anyone with combination skin because it absorbs really fast
- Anyone looking for a hydration moisturizer

Would I repurchase
For the moment it would have to be a yes and as I've mentioned its taken me awhile to find a moisturizer as good as the neutrogena hydroboost water gel. I feel that I'll be bouncing back and forth between the clinique and my neutrogena within the next year or so! :)

Overall Rating: 9/10

Stockist: Any Sephora or Clinique Counters
Price: SG$60

1-Day Acuvue Define (Part one) : About

Hi lovebums,

A couple weeks back Sam & I was contacted for a trial of the beauty enhancement 1-day Acuvue define Contact lenses. We were so thrilled to have this opportunity and after setting the date, we went for our eye fitting just last week!

The procedure was done as such, we went over to eye champ to get our eyesight checked to determine the degree to our contacts and J&J would then send over our contacts in the select style for us to try out! This is a three part post; the first post will drop information about the lenses and basic information, the second part being the Lens fitting and the second part being the review of the lenses which will be posted by sam! :)

About

" Whether large or small, the eyes are always alluring and I find myself constantly drawn to people with expressive eyes. I hope my eyes convey strength, confidence and inner beauty. I also hope that that they can serve to inspire and encourage positive energy in others. All three variants of 1 DAY ACUVUE® DEFINETM have their own appeal but my personal favourite is the Accent Style. It allows my eyes to look clear and sparkling, and I feel more confident when I put them on. "
- Han Hyo-Joo
2013 Regional Brand Ambassador

1 • DAY ACUVUE® DEFINE™ beauty contact lenses enhances Asian eyes to look naturally bigger, sparkling and more beautiful – without compromising eye health.Specially designed to enlarge the Asian iris, which averages at 11.4mm in diameter, 1 • DAY ACUVUE® DEFINE™ contact  lenses have a natural effect that makes the eyes appear larger and more defined – captivating onlookers and allowing inner beauty to shine.

Besides making the eyes beautiful, 1 • DAY ACUVUE® DEFINE™ allows the eyes to stay healthy with its innovative ACUVUE® Triple Care technology – Moisture, Oxygen, UV protection – keeping the eyes comfortable and healthy all day, every day.

Moisture
1 DAY ACUVUE® DEFINE contains 58% moisture content to give you moist and comfortable eyes all day.

Oxygen
1 • DAY ACUVUE® DEFINE gives wearers the same level of oxygen permeability throughout the lens as clear spherical contact lenses of the same material.

UV Protection
1 • DAY ACUVUE® DEFINE protects your eyes from harmful UV rays by blocking 82% of UV-A and 97% of UV-B radiation. This is in line with internationally recognized Class 2 UV blocking standards.

In addition to the Triple Care features, the Beauty-Wrapped-In-Comfort™ technology seals the colorants within the lens so the colorants have no direct contact with the eyes, protecting the health of the eyes.

The diagram above shows the protective layers within the contacts to seal the colorant, so for first time colour contact users out there, this might be the option for you! I personally am not someone who wears contacts very often but after reading about the safety measures put to these contacts I do feel a lot safer trying them out. I also have friends who are currently using Acuvue contact lenses on a day to day basis and find them rather hydrating but of course, we will definitely put it to the test and let you all know what we think of them a couple weeks time!

The Lenses

There are three different types of contacts from the 1 • DAY ACUVUE® DEFINE line, Natural Shine, Vivid Style and Accent Style. The basic details are given above, should you be looking for the lens that enlarges your pupil the accent style is the option for you!

We were given the chance to select the lenses that we'd like to try out, Sam selected the Natural Shine but they did not have stock and hence for the fitting she went with the Accent style lenses. I on the other hand, went for the vivd style lenses which deemed more obvious change in colour for my pupils.

I am going to keep this post very short with details of the contact lenses, should you want to read about our experience whilst at the lens fitting, do stayed tuned for it within the week! Have you tried any of Acuvue's contact lenses? Share your experience with us in the comments section !

Monthly: Ashley's July Favourites

Greetings inter web readers!

Its great to be back and I know my favorites post is long over due but here it is! Better late than never right? ;) The month of July was spent mostly at under the sun and hence I did not experiment with very many beauty products but more of sunscreens and basic skin care items. Amongst the time that I had, I did however, manage to try out and rediscover bits and bobs here and there and have collated my top 5 products for you below!

Top Shop EyeBrow pencil

I've never really cared for my brows up until half a year ago and lately I've been paying more attention to the way they are being groomed. So I often pluck my eyebrows to ensure that they stay within a set shape and not let them go wild. Most importantly, would be filling in my brows.

This shade is perfect, it isn't too harsh and the texture of the brow pencil is smooth enough to blend out without flaking. ( Believe me, I've had one that wouldn't blend out at all ) They come in two shades and I picked the darker one. It holds pretty decently but should you want that security I recommend getting a  brow gel to set your brows if you have very oily skin,

Stockist: TopShop stores
Price: SG$13

My Beauty Scheming Sheet Masks

Over the years, I've tested quite a number of sheet masks to see which one works best for me. Within this time frame, I've also realized that my cupids bow area and the area around my nose is incredibly sensitive because it itches once I put on certain masks. It's not the tingly feeling but rather the itchiness that brings about discomfort. So far, one of the few masks that have not made me feel this way are the My beauty Scheming Sheet Masks! I love them so much that I bought some back from Hong Kong - in particularly the bird's nest collagen mask,  I instantly feel the difference when I peel of the mask. My face feels a lot firmer and more toned.

I recommend using this product should you have semi- sensitive skin, its incredibly gentle and I always look forward to my pamper sessions once a week with the mask.

Stockist: Watsons/ SaSa / Colourmix (hk)
Price: HK$45-50 ( again, I have not seen this in Singapore as of yet and am unsure of the price)

Shiseido Perfect UV sunscreen

I felt that it was time to include this product with my favorites even though we've talked about this on our blog quite a number of times. Why? I've gone back to purchase my second bottle already! I absolutely love the finish of the sunscreen, it leaves my skin feeling very smooth and doesn't leave a sheen. It has a dry finish and it gives my skin the basic protection it needs!

Stockist: Shiseido Counters / SaSa
Price: HK$272 ( @ SaSa ) / HK$370 +  ( @shiseido counters ) // SG$ 50 +

Hawaiin Tropics Dark Tanning oil

I briefly mentioned this in my instagram update and I felt like it deserved a spot on my favorites of July. For anyone here who wants to get a tan over your holidays or whilst being out under the sun,  I recommend this product! Of course I've heard Baby oil is an option but this product smells heavenly. It smells like straight up Malibu from the bottle - a mix of coconut with a tropical twist. Smelling it just takes me back to being at the beach or the pool, pure bliss.

Sadly I did not take this product back to Singapore with me because I won't have the time to tan here but it is beach must have for me whenever I decide to soak up some sun,

Stockist:  Watsons / colourmix
Price: HK$79 (I bought this in HK and am not sure of the price in sg:( apologies!)

Maybelline Flasies Mascara

I've run out of my cover girl lash blast fusion mascara which I have fallen deeply in love with - since then I've gone back into my beauty drawer to re-discover mascara's that I have at hand and stumbled upon my Maybelline Flasies Mascara. The formulation is not wet nor sticky, it separates my lashes and gives it length. It clumps just the finest bit but the length that I get from the mascara truly opens up my eyes.

Stockist: Watsons/ SaSa
Price: SG$20.90

I hope you all have had a lovely July and of course, to our lovely Singaporean Readers, Happy Belated National Day! We hope you all are enjoying your long weekend!

Here's to an Amazing August!
ps: Both Sam & I are August babies :)

Guest Post: Summer Skincare!

Hey Dears,

so this is a first for us. You must be wondering about the title "Guest Post".. and well, we've got our very first Guest Blog Post! We were approached by Michelle, from New York (LIKE WOW HOW DID SHE FIND US!? SUCH AN HONOR!), and she talked about how she wanted to spread her knowledge and reach out to fellow bloggers and talk about the importance of guarding our skin from the sun.

Most Asians/Singaporeans are very anti-heat, and many are actually strongly against being tanned. Many girls I know, myself included, hate the dreaded sun for so many reasons: there's sweaty armpits, unnecessary/unintended tan lines and melting makeup to name a few, but also because of the dreaded P word.. PIGMENTATION. Basically, the sun can be a bit of a skin killer, and we need to know how to protect ourselves against it.

Protect!? How to protect, you ask!? Well, think no further, here's her take on it!

Summer Skincare; Let's Get Glowing!

Although summer's all about relaxing, don't give your skincare routine the summer off. Extreme summer heat can lead to excess oil or excess dryness, depending on your skin type. Because of the extreme elements of summer, you should have a daily cleansing and moisturizing routine on lock-down. Find out what cleanser works best for you, and moisturize every night. This will keep your skin from drying out or from producing excess oil.

In addition to cleansing and moisturizing, there are a couple more maneuvers to keep your skin radiant and radical this summer. Exfoliating at least twice a week will knock dirt from pores and shed old, dry skin from your face to reveal smooth skin underneath. Once you've exfoliated, a simple DIY mask is a strong weapon that'll result in gorgeous, glowing skin. The experts at Skana spa of the New York resort Turning Stone have shared this recipe for a DIY mask that will have you glowing all summer long.

Ingredients for Mask

1) 1/4 cup fresh-squeezed tomato juice with pulp
2) 1 tablespoon fresh-squeezed lime juice
3) 1 cup ripe (check if it's very soft on the outside), mashed avocado

Though these were the instructions given, Ash and I had a bit of difficulty locating tomato juice with pulp.. so as you can see above, we opted for 2 tomatoes instead! Fresher, no? Haha

P/S: This entire mask only cost us less than SGD $5! Plus, there was so much leftover, we passed my Dad some Avacado to make a salad, and shared the mask between us and my Mum!

Things You Will Need

1) A Fruit Knife
2) A Cutting Board
3) 1 Table Spoon
4) 2-3 Bowls depending
5) A Blender
6) A Masher (we didn't have this.. and used a fork.. bad idea)

How To Make

(Ash and I have dubbed this the Guacamole mask, because that's just how it looks like, lol! We've also taken the liberty to take some pictures to attach with the instructions of what we did so everything's much clearer for you guys!)

1) Pour the lime juice out into the table spoon, and into the bowl.
2) Cut the tomatoes into halves.
3) Dig out the pulp into the bowl with the lime juice inside the bowl.
4) Cut the remaining tomatoes (skin and such) into tiny pieces and place in blender.
5) Blend until you feel that the mixture is pasty and mushy enough.
6) Place the mixture into the bowl with the pulp and lime juice.
7) Cut the avacado into halves for easy digging out with a spoon.
8) Mash the avacadoes in a bigger bowl (if you'd like) with the previous mixture.
9) If unsatisfactory, put the whole lot into the blender for a smoother mix.
10) Tada! You're done! You can also keep it in a container to store for an extra day!

If you still feel that your mixture is too runny, you can add some honey or corn starch. We felt ours was alright, so we didn't; but we kind of regretted it after because it WAS too runny. So we suggest perhaps either adding the honey, or lessening the amount of tomato juice?

Using the Mask

1) Prep your face by rinsing with warm water.
2) Pat dry and apply a generous layer of the mask to your face.
3) Chill out and let your mask set for about 35-40 minutes.
4) When your mask is dry, rinse away the mask with warm water.
5) When you're finished, rinse again with cold water to close your pores back up.

Overall Thoughts

It doesn't take a genius for anyone to see that our mask turned out all goopy and not at all mashed up and smooth. Hence, that was what attributed to what I felt was extreme discomfort. So, on that note, I would suggest that if you try out this mask, mash your avacado up real well and probably opt for tomato juice instead.

Also, the lime juice and tomato juice was kind of acidic, so I suppose that made for some kind of "peel" effect.. apparently some people use pineapple for that? Anyway it was kind of itchy, like the feeling you get when your scab or wound is healing. It drove me and Ash insane for a good 10 minutes because all we wanted to do was scratch our face lol. We half expected our faces to be burnt and red when the mask was washed off.

But! Due to the avacado, which I believe was extremely moisturizing, our skin was soooooooo moist and hydrated, and not at all dry or flaky! Also, the acidity of the juices just aided in good exfoliation and allowed our skin to look all glowy and full of natural blush! We couldn't stop touching our faces afterward. If you guys are looking for a cheap and natural mask, we say give this a go! :)

(Sorry there's no before/after pics.. we took them but the lighting was so different that it was hard to be fair!)

Review: TopShop Lipstick "The Damned"

Hi Lovelies,

Guess who's back in town?! :) Yes, after 3 months I am back and despite the fact that schools starting for us today - I am so happy to see Sam again! We had a very eventful day catching up and getting back into our usual selves with each other :) Anywho, onto the post!

Ps: I will have my favorites post up within the week :) !

I've always pondered upon the quality of Topshop makeup and I finally gave into a couple of their products earlier this month. Topshop launched their in-house makeup collection in 2010 and since then there's been hype about their nail polishes, lipsticks and their creme blushes. I managed to get my hands on their brow pencil and their lipstick and have been testing them out for about two weeks now.

I was looking at the colours that they had to offer and to my disappointment they didn't have as many colours as I hope there'd be.  I believe there are only 11 shades available in Singapore and about 8/9 in Hong Kong.

Packaging

I've always liked the simple packaging that Topshop beauty products comes with hand draw illustrations ( on their creme blushes ) and text. It just separates it from the rest of your products within your beauty drawer.

Swatches

It's definitely a buildable colour, I personally like wearing it with just single swatch on a day to day basis, but even with the heavier swatch, the colour is absolutely gorgeous and wearable! The texture is rather creamy, isn't drying and has a slight bit of sheen, no shimmer is present. If you can't already tell, I have a thing for berry/ plum shade lipsticks, I've always felt that those went well against my skin tone.

Application

In the photograph above, you can see that I've already prepped my lips with a lip balm before application, however the lipstick is decently moisturizing on its own. A very berry shade indeed and it reminds me of a slightly muted version of M.A.C's lipstick in rebel.

Overall Thoughts

I love this lipstick, it's a very versatile colour that I can wear on an every day basis as a light wash or build it up for a night out. Sadly the only downside I find to it is the lasting power. It does wash out completely after about 4 hours. There isn't a significant scent to the lipstick either, although people have claimed that it has a floral scent to it. I really like the colour and will definitely be wearing it more often.

Recommended for:
If you are starting to experiment with slightly bolder lipsticks, try this shade! Its not too overpowering but still has that pop of colour!

Would I repurchase?
yes! despite the lasting power I am a fan of the colour and Should I try out any other shades, I'll be sure to keep you all posted!

HK $99 - 150 // SG $ 19.90 +

Overall Rating: 7.5 / 10
just because the colour doesn't last more than 3 hours on your lips
